Shlomit - Project overview

Shlomit app had started in a hackathon dealing with social outcast among children.  This heartbreaking subject yield for my attention, as I am a mother to a sweet toddler who is growing up so fast, in a challenging modern social reality where all kids in school has to deal with. I got the calling to take an action, collaborating with a team of parents who happened to be as I am in the tech industry. Together we developed a tool to assist kids and their educators to recognize social situations that require attention.

The tool is an emotional digital diary and a data dashboard for educators of quick social recognition.

On a personal note, I truly hope that through this tool

No child will be left alone, facing an out cast without anyone knowing about it.

Long story short...

Here are few seconds from our pitch:

The Challenge

Social outcast is a sensitive situation, both for the kids and the educators.

  • Kids are not being thought how to express their emotions

  • Educators are thriving to digital tools to quickly learn the social status and well being in the class room.

  • Children going through a social outcast are too embarrassed to share with a parent or a teacher

  • Children wish that educators will know what they are going through

How did we come to the Solution?

In order to understand the pain points and needs few steps took place simultaneously:

  • Interviews with target users (children, educators, parents)

  • A google form questioner was spread to gather data of needs

  • A market research of what are the pro's and con's in similar products

  • what is done in Denmark and what is emotional social education

01

Interviews & Questioner

Main conclusions:

  • The majority of children suffers from social out cast and bully is between the 5th-8th grade.

  • Children wish their educators would know what is going on with them socially in class but are embarrassed to speak about it.

  • Educators are lacking right now a quick digital tool for an early recognize of children's social situations.

  • Educators believe that kids will share more about their social status via a digital tool that will lower their embarrassment.

02

The competition

Main conclusions:

  • The use of the solutions is complex, performed once or twice a year only, that not answer the needs for both users end.

  • Children trigger to supply info could benefit more attention.

03

In Denmark

Main conclusions:

  • Studies had shown that a daily use of validated emotions increase the well being while decrease bulling among children

  • Educators who includes social emotional education in the school, assist on preventing bulling

How did we get to our solution?

Thinking of the most accurate solution that is possible both technology along with budget we came up with some ideas that we ruled out, pivoted until remained with the most valuable one.

Business Module
  • At first it will be a license per school

  • After pilot it will be a "sell module" - cost per user

The maim goal at the moment is to run a pilot on 1-2 schools.

Prototype

As a Lean startup method, we developed a quick product and tested it in one classroom
Here are user testing results:

Supporting conclusions:

  • 100% of the kids "felt good" to share their emotions.

  • 100% of the kids had said they will definitely independently share their emotions in the app tomorrow.

  • 50% of the kids wanted to share more info than what the app currently allows.

The product, in it's lean version was excepted among the kids, the engagement exist, we anticipate retention and a daily use

The challenges:

  • 20% of the kids said that if a "really unpleasant" situation will accrue, they are not sure if they will share.

  • 90% of the kids shared their emotions were positive and they spend their day with friends. We still need to check if they will share complex emotions.

  • We need to check if sharing the same emotions on a daily base might eliminate the kids will to share..

Retrospective conclusions

This startup is an ongoing project, our goal for the near future is continue testing the product on a whole school who volunteered to adopt it to their active routine to teach kids social emotion education. we have implementations we will add on an agile basis. we will tighten the product along the feedback we will gain.

We are truly excited and believe our product can assist on bulling and outcast situation children face today. we hope no child will be left alone struggling with complex feelings.

Thank you for reading all about it :-)
